Why your business needs to be on Instagram

Instagram’s photo-sharing platform enhances image-sharing and brand awareness.

What is Instagram?

As its name implies, Instagram provides a platform to instantly share photos and videos with friends. Users can add filters and other embellishments to their photos, and accounts may be set to public or private. Owned by Facebook, Instagram integrates seamlessly with the Facebook system to enhance image sharing on the world’s biggest social media. Instagram includes a variety of built-in filters to add interesting photo effects to otherwise every-day images.

Instagram

Who is the audience?

As of March 2014, 200 million people actively use Instagram, and 70 percent of those users log in every day. The site has received the attention of the Fortune 500, with 25 percent of those companies using the site, and 43 percent of the top 100 brands post to it. Female users edge out males (20 percent vs. 15 percent, respectively, of adult Internet users who have an Instagram account), and 34 percent of people age 14 to 34 use the site.

Why do I need it?

It’s an easy way to integrate images into your overall social media strategy, and other marketers are posting with success. Instagram referrals to a consumer site post an average sales value of $66.75. Also, because it’s integrated with Facebook, you can supercharge your image posting and improve engagement with prospective customers on multiple platforms.

What to post?

Spend some time brainstorming what kinds of images represent your brand. Think outside the usual business headshots and product stills, and include some more feel-good photos in the mix. A photo of a perfect mountain sunset, for example, can blend in well with your business’ brand and message. Consider the mood and visual associations with your band. Creative photo contests can also help boost audience engagement.
